Abstract

The literal meaning of calligraphy is to write beautifully. It is a classical artform that is a fundamental element of Islamic art and his highly regarded as a sacred art. But it is not just a part of Islamic art, with time it has evolved incorporating the contemporary style and changes which has led to the continuous revival of this artform. This article is an attempt to document historical progress in the field of calligraphy in different styles and regions. about neglect towards the art of calligraphy in Pakistan and its status as a higher art. It discusses the aestheticand practical aspects of calligraphy as an applied arts in different styles and cultures and its journey of evolution. It also discusses the contribution of conventional styles of calligraphy in order to facilitate the creation of modern styles of calligraphy.This research paper also attempts to look at the various factors that were responsible for the devaluating process of the art of Calligraphy.
